The concept of radioactivity is interesting and has proven to be extremely beneficial to mankind. Radioactive materials were in existence for centuries before they were actually ‘discovered’ and who discovered radioactivity. In the year 1895, the famous scientist William Roentgen discovered the occurrence of naturally occurring fluorescent materials such as uranium. The following year, in 1896, the noted French physicist Henri Becquerel used these materials and conducted experiments to discover the existence of x-rays.
He exposed fluorescent uranium to the rays of the Sun in the hope that it will emit x-rays. However, this was not to be because the day he chose to do this experiment in Paris was the day when the sky was overcast. This led to failure of this experiment. He persevered with confidence and hope and finally did discover the concept of radioactivity, though he did not specifically coin this term.
The term ‘radioactivity’ was coined by another physicist Marie Curie who, along with her husband Pierre, conducted many more experiments that helped them isolate uranium. To their surprise, they discovered that the remaining ore continued to show enhanced activity as compared to pure uranium which they had isolated.
This inspired them to continue their experiments on the ore which resulted in the discovery of many list of radioactive elements such as radium and polonium, in addition to uranium. After further experiments they discovered the chemical properties for each element and named them.
Radioactive decay was studied further by a New Zealand physicist, Ernest Rutherford, who is credited with the discovery of alpha, beta and gamma rays. During the same period, scientists also discovered radioactive isotopes. Two nuclei that have similar atomic number, but different atomic masses are called isotopes. Though these isotopes have similar chemical properties, their physical properties are different. The other key terms related to radioactivity are decay type (refers to the type of rays they emit) and half life (the time taken for half of the element to decay).
